The Catholic church encouraged the use of biblical naming from the New Testament and those of Saint's. Old Testament ones were not commonly used by Christians until the 18th century. The language of origin of the 'Christian name' was therefore Latin, Hebrew or Greek. Much of Europe adhered to the Catholic religion up to the Renaissance period of the 16th Century. Catholic name's were therefore commonly used in Portugal, Britain, France, Spain and Italy.
